Designed around a researched customer profile, as the university unit was focusing on the business and marketing side of the fashion industry, the Oversized Hybrid was created for a customer who would be bold, creative and slightly unconventional. An individual who’s involved in maybe designing, art curating, but also who’s fully aware of the state of the world often volunteering for different causes. Therefore, this customer would need a product that’s both eye-catching, making them stand out, but also a product that is functional, fit for a busy individual on the go. I chose to make a 2 in 1 garment that has a detachable gilet as its lining, offering versatility with the owner’s wardrobe, that’s adaptable to different kinds of weather and offers the wearer a unique experience.

Constructed from deconstructed military uniforms and pre-loved garments, this coat is a merge between balance and asymmetry. With panels that reflect in opposing ways on both the sleeves and the front sides, the overall effect created is one of permanent dynamism. The colour palette is compiled of diverse shades of green with some black and yellow thrown in the mix, in order to catch the viewers’ attention.
The coat has a strong sustainable value as it is made using pieces of rescued clothing and fabric scraps from previous projects. Some of the fabrics were transformed by being quilted, such as the shoulder panels or the gilet. The light green colour was achieved by diluting screen printing ink in water and soaking a white fabric in it, preserving the quality of the fabric instead of stiffening it.
The design on the left panel was printed on the fabric using dye sublimation and it was based on the secondary theme of compassion. As many garments would be coming from the military, it would send a beautiful message that although there are conflicts, we’re all humans and we experience the same emotions.
